The question usually gets framed as which one is better, as if one of them is simply the more advanced choice. It's the wrong question. Webflow and custom development are built for different jobs, and most projects have a fairly clear answer once the actual requirements are on the table.
The mistake is picking a technology first and fitting the project to it, instead of the other way around.
When Webflow Wins
Webflow is the right call when the site is mostly content and presentation: marketing pages, landing pages, blogs, portfolios, sites where the team needs to publish and edit without waiting on a developer.
It also wins on speed and budget for anything in that category - a Webflow build usually ships faster and costs less than the equivalent custom site, without giving up a pixel-perfect design or clean technical SEO.
When Custom Development Wins
Custom development takes over as soon as the site starts behaving like an application: user accounts, dashboards, permissions, complex business logic, or integrations that go deeper than a form submission.
Webflow can stretch to cover some of this with custom code, but at a certain point the workarounds cost more than building the logic properly in a framework meant for it. Full control over performance, data, and scale is the other reason to move to custom - there's no platform ceiling to design around.
